Business & Financial Interests
Before being elected to Parliament, James Maloney was a lawyer. He reportedly practiced municipal and development law in Toronto for many years and was a partner at the law firm Hughes Amys LLP. His public disclosures with the Office of the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner have listed assets such as a self-administered Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) and a holding in a limited partnership related to his former law firm.
Public Controversies
In 2021, James Maloney faced criticism for sending out partisan flyers to his constituents that were designed to look like official notices from Statistics Canada about the census. The mailouts used a similar font and the headline "CENSUS 2021" before asking residents for their opinions on local issues. Opposition parties and members of the public accused him of intentionally misleading residents to collect their data for political purposes. Maloney's office stated that the mailer was not intended to be deceptive.
