Business & Financial Interests
Before entering federal politics in 2019, Doug Shipley served as a city councillor for the City of Barrie, Ontario, starting in 2010. Prior to his time in municipal politics, he reportedly owned and operated a local business, Shipley's Restaurant and Catering, for over two decades.
Public Controversies
In 2021, media reports indicated that Doug Shipley claimed expenses for a secondary residence in Ottawa while also owning a condominium in the city. This practice, while permitted under House of Commons rules for MPs whose primary residence is more than 100 kilometers from Parliament Hill, has drawn public scrutiny for several parliamentarians. Shipley reportedly stated that he was following all the rules set out for Members of Parliament.
